New Age Mafia was a RuneScape mafia clan founded on April 23, 2011, following an internal split within Divine Mafia. The clan was formed by a group of departing members, including several staff and high-ranking individuals, after disagreements over leadership and direction.

History

Origins and Formation

The formation of New Age Mafia can be traced to instability within Divine Mafia in early 2011.

On February 1, 2011, Gw Josep1 stepped down from leadership after two years and appointed Chanman170 and RockisDead as dual leaders. The arrangement led to internal tension, particularly surrounding leadership authority and the direction of the clan. Due to the logistics of split ownership and the technical limitations of Runescape's clan system, it was difficult for two leaders to handle day to day operations. In March 2011, a referendum was orchestrated by Gw Josep1 to select between Chanman170 and RockisDead as the Divine Mafia's primary leader. Chanman170 narrowly won due to newly acquired members shifting the balance in his favour. Chanman170 continued to support the recruitment of lower combat level and skill level members and enacted very lax standards for clan member conduct. This created a significant rift between Divine Mafia's older and more committed members and the newer less serious members.Shortly after winning the referendum, Chanman170 became significantly less active and refused to address day to day issues within the clan.

By April 22, 2011, discussions had begun among several members about leaving Divine Mafia to form a new clan. On April 23, 2011, New Age Mafia was officially founded by RockisDead, Cowhidepie, Godcody, Fredter, Ef beochxl, Goalie nub, gf binladen, A Nerd is Fat, D r a k o n, Can I plow u, Overlimit101, and 420 high 247. The departure of these members resulted in a noticeable reduction in Divine Mafia’s active membership and marked a significant organizational split.Due to the significant loss of senior leadership from Divine Mafia, other members would ultimately leave in favour of other clans outside of the mafia community.

New Age Mafia aimed to distinguish itself from the other Mafias by focusing more on high level game content and PvP. The mafia name and conventions were carried forward as a homage to the mafia community.

Early Development

Following its founding, New Age Mafia experienced steady early growth.

Throughout mid-2011, the clan expanded its membership and developed its internal structure. A citadel was established on July 26, 2011, reflecting a level of organizational maturity. Membership milestones were reached over the following months, including 100 members by August 24, 2011.

The clan also progressed rapidly in total experience, surpassing 1 billion experience by September 14, 2011. Shortly after, a 120+ combat requirement was introduced on September 17, 2011, indicating a shift toward more selective recruitment.

Purpose and Traditions

New Age Mafia based a lot of its leadership and event structure on Divine Mafia. The clan was created as a high level event clan with daily events focusing on PvP, PvM and minigames.Due to New Age Mafia's higher level combat requirements, this afforded the clan the ability to plan events that were not practical for Divine Mafia.

The clan regularly ran inter-clan wars with various themes, such as iron equipment wars. These events kept the clan in a much higher state of preparedness for any arranged clan wars, with many members investing in dedicated PvP equipment.

Monthly clan town-hall meetings occurred in the clan's citadel. These town-hall style meetings were a notable departure from Divine Mafia's method of designating planning solely to the event committee.

Relations with Divine Mafia

Relations between Divine Mafia and New Age Mafia were initially uncertain following the split.

In July 2011, Gw Josep1 returned to leadership of Divine Mafia in an effort to stabilize the clan. During this period, attempts were made to establish cooperation between the two groups. A peace agreement was briefly reached, and a potential merger was discussed.

New Age Mafia ultimately declined the merger proposal, choosing to remain independent. Following this decision, relations deteriorated, and both clans engaged in ongoing hostility, including hit-and-run clan chat raids and competitive recruitment.

Relations with the Mafia Community

New Age Mafia was created when the majority of other mafias were in decline and had minimal participation in fading traditions of the community. RockIsDead wanted to keep public affiliation with the mafia community to a minimum as it would lead to the perception of New Age Mafia being a role-playing clan, rather than a high level event clan. New Age Mafia invited all active mafia clans to participate in clan wars, however most clans declined to participate due to New Age Mafia's vastly superior combat force.

Final Days

By October 2011, New Age Mafia experienced internal instability.

A number of staff members resigned within a short period, citing disagreements, internal conflicts, and disruptions within the clan. These departures significantly reduced the clan’s leadership structure.

On October 13, 2011, RockisDead resigned from the clan. Ownership was unofficially retained by RockisDead, however the remaining members were inactive. The former leadership of the clan went on to pursue other non-mafia clans with some eventually returning to a reincarnated Divine Mafia.
